Drive Our Roots Deep Into Scripture

Walking With God Through Pain & Suffering, Tim Keller
Modern approach to happiness
- remove any and all suffering: avoid pain, or if you can’t, sedate it
“No amount of money, power, and planning can prevent bereavement, dire illness, relationship betrayal, financial disaster, or a host of other troubles from entering your life.

Psalms 1:3 (AMP)
And he will be like a tree firmly planted [and fed] by streams of water,
Which yields its fruit in its season;
Its leaf does not wither;
And in whatever he does, he prospers [and comes to maturity].

Strategy for happiness is staying in the “shopping season” of our lives, then when our circumstances change for the worse—and, at some point, they will change—our happiness will disappear.
Something deeper & firmer than conditioning circumstances
Roots that go deep into the scripture and allow it to sustain us

1. Treasure The Scripture
Psalm 1:2 (NIV)
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
Happy person delights in the Word
Not a duty
Will only escape the temporary pleasures of the world if we have a greater pleasure in the Word.

Motivated by obligations & responsibilities
“God wants us to BE with Him before He wants us to DO for Him.” - Unknown
- Not able to sustain us spiritually
- Burn out
“God wants us to BE with Him before He wants us to DO for Him.” - Unknown

Meditate on the Word
Cow chews the cud:
Eats some grass, lays down for a nap, wakes up and regurgitates the previous grass, chews on it some more, takes another nap, and on and on.
We need to read our Bible like a cow, memorizing it, pondering it, “chewing it up” to extract every last bit of goodness it can offer.

Matthew 11:25-26 (NLT)
25 At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. 26 Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way!

2. Treasure The Church
Psalms 1:1 (AMP)
Blessed [fortunate, prosperous, and favored by God] is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked [following their advice and example],
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
Nor sit [down to rest] in the seat of scoffers (ridiculers).
Choose our community wisely.

“Show me your friends and I will show you your future.”
Only when the church, the people of God, becomes the community for them will they begin to really grow.
Spiritual body, an organism of living people whose lives are nurtured and sustained through the teaching of God’s Word

Amos 8:11-12 (AMP)
11
“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord God,
“When I will send hunger over the land,
Not hunger for bread or a thirst for water,
But rather [a hunger] for hearing the words of the Lord.
12
“People shall stagger from sea to sea [to the very ends of the earth]
And from the north even to the east;
They will roam here and there to seek the word of the Lord[longing for it as essential for life],
But they will not find it.

2 Timothy 4:1-4 (NIV)
4 In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Church is a community we treasure most and should be the place of our best and deepest relationships.
Sermons might inspire us, but it is our community that shapes us as we are deeply rooted in the Word and practicing It.
